Duties and Responsibilities:

Ophthalmologists are medically trained doctors with specialist skills in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the eye and visual system. They treat patients of all ages, from babies to the elderly. Most aim to become consultants, where the role combines the technical skills of a micro surgeon with the therapeutic and diagnostic skills of a doctor.

Salary:

$90,000 - $150,000

Education:

Ophthalmologists' need extensive training after high school: four years of college, four years of medical school, one year of internship, and three years of training as hospital residents in ophthalmology.

Reflection:

I wouldn’t like to be an ophthalmologists because I have something else in mind to do when I grow up.

Opthalmic Technician

Duties and Responsibilities:

An ophthalmic assistant is a person who works with an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) to provide patient care by performing many different eye-related clinical functions. Ophthalmic assistants help ophthalmologists care for patients by taking histories, performing various procedures and tests, and preparing patients to see the doctor. Their work provides the ophthalmologist with important information to help diagnose and treat patients.

Salary:

 $14,000 - $25,000

Education:

Students enrolled in a 2-year ophthalmology technician associate's degree program receive in-depth instruction on taking patient histories, taking eye measurements, explaining medical procedures to patients, performing eye evaluations and running diagnostic tests. They also learn to administer eye medication and inform patients about proper contact lens usage. 

Reflection:

I would not like to be an Ophthalmic Technician because I’m not interested in working for this.

Operating Room Technician

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Cleans and maintains surgical supplies in the operating room.

• Cleans, maintains, and prepares surgical instruments for surgeries.

• Assists the nurses in the preparation of patients for surgery and in the recovery room.

• Performs other related duties as required.

Salary:

$41,790 per year

$20.09 per hour

Education:

Technically a high school diploma or GED satisfies the qualifications for a candidate to enter the necessary training programs and become an ORT. However, earning an associate’s or bachelor’s degree usually makes an operating room technician more desirable to employers, not to mention better positioned for opportunities that come along over the years. Whether the prospective technicians major in a science or not, all types of laboratory courses are appropriate.
