Information Specialists
Duties
and Responsibilities:
Health
Information Specialists obtain, post, and analyze medical, workload, finance,
and insurance data. They ensure that this information is properly
recorded into medical records so practitioners can plan and evaluate health
care provided to patients.
· > Responds
to requests for copies of health records; ensures appropriate paperwork
(release of information, subpoena, etc.) is on file, proper payment has been
collected and logs details of request for health information. Ensures that
copies include only information that is requested and available to be released.
· * Searches
for and investigates information contained in files, inserts additional data
into records, completes reports, keeps files current and supplies information from
file or removes files upon request.
· * Process,
store and retrieve electronic health information. Maintains and utilizes a
variety of health record indexes, storage and retrieval systems.
· * Prepares
input for electronic health information systems and for processing vital
statistics, insurance, and other forms and documents.
· * Scans
patient health records into the patient’s electronic file and keeps electronic
files current.
· * Stores
and/or destroys obsolete files in accordance with company policy and legal
requirements.
· * Performs
other duties as assigned or as needed
Average
salary:$
$20,000 - $25,000
Education:
Accredited record
technicians must earn an associate's degree from an accredited college program
or from the American Health Information Management Association Independent
Study Program. Additionally, they must pass a credentialing examination.
Record administrators must
complete a bachelor's degree program in the field and pass a certification
examination.
